The lower Dean is open for all to use, public rights of way are in place throughout the entirety of the Dean. We do ask that all users adhere to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code whilst using the Dean. Should you notice any items that require maintenance then please contact us.
Forestry Management
As part of the deed of gift and to comply with good practice guidelines a survey has been carried out by Borders Forest Trust which has highlighted some remedial works we must undertake to ensure the safety of the public and to help the forest remain a natural vista. One of the major and undoubtedly the most controversial recommendations is the removal of the non native sitka spruce:
Sitka Spruce, occupying approximately 30% of the Lower Dean are non native and usually planted for harvesting. Albeit very pleasant to see and walk through they are inherently unstable and create a dense canopy slowing the growth of both native trees and flower / fauna.
